This past weekend, as I sat down at my graphics computer to update my website, which I have done thousands of times, a realization hit me. I have been at this keyboard working on my site for 13 years now!
Each year, I try to launch something new for the anniversary of 9/11…new page, a Facebook forward, etc. As I was preparing to finish a new poem and graphics called “They’re Still Dying”, I had an epiphany so to speak. This year I want to post a challenge.
When I launched this section on my site called “Fallen Soldiers”, I never realized the journey I was about to take. I have listed the name of each military loss since day one. As I go to my keyboard to update, every time is an emotional experience for me. It has brought me in contact with family members, children, parents…the list goes on. Tombstones with my words inscribed. It has been a very humbling experience. Because…who am I?
We all hear the news about the cost of this war, the budget, the cut backs, Government spending etc. But, for me, the way I feel is this. Debts will get paid. Budgets will get worked out in time. And there will always be political controversy. The real cost of this war is listed on the pages of my site. Every single name on these lists can never be replaced. There is no government plan to bring them back. They paid the ultimate sacrifice for each and every one of us.
So, with that said, I challenge you to go to the link listed below and start with 2001. Scroll through every name on each year, ending with my last post in 2014. Be prepared to be there a long time. It is then and only then, you will understand why I do what I do. We can never forget the true cost of 9/11, including the lost lives here in this country on that tragic day.
I made this post public on Facebook. Please
feel free to share. Let’s make it go viral…as they say today.
